We could simply avoid anxiety-inducing platforms, but it’s not that easy — we

In essence, I developed a growth mindset. I invested my time and energy in developing new skills, solving new problems, acquiring new knowledge, and figuring out ways to enhance my life.

Excellent, not-super-expensive food, more dipping sauces for tortilla chips than should even be possible, and a funky Elvis-meets-junkyard-chic aesthetic that lets you know this is a place for fun, margaritas, and enchiladas as long as your forearm. Any heartburn generated here is worth it.

The veiled processes behind Facebook’s moderation efforts have long frustrated civil liberties advocates, academics studying misinformation, and internet watchdog groups. In early November, internal documents related to Facebook’s moderation of voter suppression and misinformation were leaked to Vice News, revealing a confusing set of qualifiers for what does and does not count as a violation. Facebook’s role in facilitating election turmoil and, in some cases, acts of violence, is difficult to quantify but has been consistently documented by journalists over the past two years. On November 17, however, when questioned by the Senate Judiciary Committee about Facebook’s accountability, Mark Zuckerberg said he believed the platform’s systems for addressing misinformation “worked well.”

Avoiding negative inputs has become increasingly difficult since COVID-19. We need to stay informed of the latest developments, but because there is so much misinformation that it’s hard to know what to believe.

If we had an ID for each streaming session then distributed tracing could easily reconstruct session failure by providing service topology, retry and error tags, and latency measurements for all service calls. We could also get contextual information about the streaming session by joining relevant traces with account metadata and service logs. This insight led us to build Edgar: a distributed tracing infrastructure and user experience.Like a snake trying to eat its own tail, however, this is counterproductive. It’s best to avoid alcohol, but if this seems unreasonable, you should limit your alcohol consumption, as this is a core cause of anxiety for many people.I don’t take drugs or drink alcohol anymore. Alcohol, in particular, can damage our brains in many ways. Firstly, it blocks communication between neurons leading to immediate symptoms of intoxication, such as slurred speech, poor memory, and slowed reflexes. Secondly, alcohol is one of the primary causes of neurotoxicity. This occurs when too much exposure to a neurotransmitter can cause neurons to ‘burn out.’

Unfortunately, research shows that people are more interested in alcohol than their health, especially since the recent pandemic. This is not unexpected. Many people use alcohol to avoid how they feel, and with so many people experiencing anxiety and stress, many are taking the easier option.

That is the first question our engineering teams asked us when integrating the tracer library. It is an important question because tracer libraries intercept all requests flowing through mission-critical streaming services. Safe integration and deployment of tracer libraries in our polyglot runtime environments was our top priority. We earned the trust of our engineers by developing empathy for their operational burden and by focusing on providing efficient tracer library integrations in runtime environments.

It’s difficult to give an exact figure, but the NHS advises men and women not to drink more than 14 units a week, and if you drink regularly, to spread those units over 3 or more days. This factsheet from the WHO/Europe provides important information about alcohol consumption and COVID-19.

Fascinated by concepts such as awareness, meditation, and self, I devoured every book I could find. I became a student of life… and went back to college to study psychology and philosophy.

A better iteration of Chipotle, with a little more heat around dishes like the Cholula Hot & Sweet Chicken. We’d ding them for a menu that doesn’t favor beef dishes, but we’re too busy wolfing down these chicken street tacos. When we started building Edgar four years ago, there were very few open-source distributed tracing systems that satisfied our needs. Our tactical approach was to use Netflix-specific libraries for collecting traces from Java-based streaming services until open source tracer libraries matured. By 2017, open source projects like Open-Tracing and Open-Zipkin were mature enough for use in polyglot runtime environments at Netflix. We chose Open-Zipkin because it had better integrations with our Spring Boot based Java runtime environment. We use Mantis for processing the stream of collected traces, and we use Cassandra for storing traces. Our distributed tracing infrastructure is grouped into three sections: tracer library instrumentation, stream processing, and storage. Traces collected from various microservices are ingested in a stream processing manner into the data store. The following sections describe our journey in building these components. This chain overcame its tongue-tripping name to become ubiquitous with a Subway-like concept where you see your big-ass burrito get stuffed in public. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, director-general of the World Health Organisation (WHO), pulls no punches on this topic: “We’re not just fighting an epidemic; we’re fighting an infodemic. Fake news spreads faster and more easily than this virus, and is just as dangerous.”

Typically, a little better than you expect, with a menu a mile long and lots of combo options if you want to, say, eat beef empanadas alongside a house salad. (Seriously, though?) Their supermarket chips and dips aren’t bad, either.

Prior to Edgar, our engineers had to sift through a mountain of metadata and logs pulled from various Netflix microservices in order to understand a specific streaming failure experienced by any of our members. Reconstructing a streaming session was a tedious and time consuming process that involved tracing all interactions (requests) between the Netflix app, our Content Delivery Network (CDN), and backend microservices. The process started with manual pull of member account information that was part of the session. The next step was to put all puzzle pieces together and hope the resulting picture would help resolve the member issue. We needed to increase engineering productivity via distributed request tracing.

Open late, super cheap, hits the spot when you’re drunk or haven’t eaten all day, generous with sauce packets. This place is never going away, so stop feeling guilty about your patronage. RIP Gidget.

This is an example of a question our on-call engineers need to answer to help resolve a member issue — which is difficult when troubleshooting distributed systems. Investigating a video streaming failure consists of inspecting all aspects of a member account. In our previous blog post we introduced Edgar, our troubleshooting tool for streaming sessions. Now let’s look at how we designed the tracing infrastructure that powers Edgar.
